Environmental DNA research is a fast and efficient way of measuring water quality.
Water quality is often measured by the presence of indicator species. However, these species can be hard to find. Environmental DNA research helps in detecting feces and skin cells of the elusive indicator species. It is a fast and efficient method that can also be used to track invasive species. The big Naturalis DNA database is crucial for this kind of work and is constantly updated and extended with new findings. In the area of water quality, we work together with KWR Watercycle Research Institute.
