“There are few countries that offer better possibilities for biodiversity studies than the Netherlands.”

The tropics, with its wealth of species, is often thought to be the best place to study biodiversity. Difficult field conditions, taxonomical problems and lack of basic data on for instance distribution or abiotic factors make work on biodiversity in the tropics however often difficult. The Netherlands is less species rich but has with 40.000 species still a bewildering diversity on offer. The amount of information available on the Dutch flora and fauna is almost unrivaled and information on land use, climate and human impact is extremely detailed. The possibilities offered by the Netherlands for studies on biodiversity are nearly endless but are still poorly explored.

Career

I currently work as scientist for the EIS Kenniscentrum insecten and a program leader Bhutan for Naturalis Biodiversity Center

EIS Kenniscentrum Insecten brings together information on distribution and ecology of invertebrates.  In order to do so we maintain distribution databases, organize mapping schemes and publish a newsletter, a journal, a series of entomological keys and a book series. Much of the information gathered by the EIS can be found through the website Dutch Species Catalogue (Nederlands Soortenregister), a complete list of the biodiversity of the Netherlands. In addition we act as consultant for governmental and non-governmental organizations giving advice on policy and conservation regarding invertebrates in the Netherlands. This includes the production of red lists, conservation action plans and advice on invasive species.

Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden is actively involved in the study of Bhutanese biodiversity. This is done in cooperation with the Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment (UWICE), College of Natural Resources (CNR) at Lobesa, Sherubtse College and the National Plant Protection Centre and is coordinated by the Bhutanese National Biodiversity Center, Thimphu. The project is funded by the Bhutan Trust Fund for environment and conservation and the Uyttenboogaart-Eliasen Foundation. This cooperation has resulted in a series joined field expeditions held since 2013 focusing on wasp, dragonflies, moths, ladybeetles and mollusc. In the period 2017-2020 we hope to put more emphasis on freshwater invertebrates and on pollinators.
