Research

Research interest

Since the end of 2012 I am back to my first love in Taxonomy, the Chalcidoidea. After my PhD research on Apocrypta (Chalcidoidea, parasites of fig wasps) at Leiden University, I was appointed at the Plant Protection Service in Wageningen. During ten years I identified the Lepidoptera intercepted in the field crops and at im- and export inspections. Soon I became head of Entomology and explored, next to my identification work, the field of pest risk assessment. In 1991 the University of Amsterdam appointed me at the Zoological Museum. I started as a researcher, became head of Entomology and eventually, the last years before it merged with Naturalis, director of the Zoological Museum. During the years at this institute I worked on processes of speciation in Dichrorampha (Lepidoptera), keys of Arthropods of Economic Importance, the phylogeny of the Yponomeutinae (Lepidoptera), the significance of Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) for entomology and the history of the Zoological Museum.

Keywords

chalcidoidea, host relations, phylogeny, taxonomy

Current research topics

My current research focus on the Chalcidoidea reared from leafminers collected by dr. Erik van Nieukerken during the past thirty years. After having identified the species I will sort out the patterns of specificity among the chalcids, their hostplants and leafminers, as their phylogenetic signal.

Collaborations

For my current research I cooperate with dr. Erik van Nieukerken, Camiel Doorenweerd, Chalcidoidea specialists especially with Theo Gijswijt.

Collections

I focus on material in the Naturalis collection. The Palaearctic collection has been identified by specialists in the past, primarily by Theo Gijswijt. The Chalcidoidea from other biogeographic regions are unidentified. After having identified the material collected by dr. Erik van Nieukerken, I will work on the rest of the unidentified material in the collection.
