Research

Research interest

My research interests are in Systematics, Biogeography and Evolutionary Biology, to which I mostly employ European amphibians as study objects. Some of my work has a taxonomic basis, including revisions of Cave Salamanders (genus Proteus), Newts (genus Triturus), Common toads (genus Bufo) and Midwife Toads (genus Alytes). Another interest is in Biogeography and Hybrid Zones. A current focus of my work is on the effect of the quality of the terrestrial habitat on dispersal / gene-flow in metapopulations of pond-breeding amphibians. This work is carried out on toads and newts in the UK, France and Portugal. It combines approaches from ecology and geography, in particular GIS and satellite imagery, with population genetics. For a citation overview see http://scholar.google.nl/citations?user=YBM9v0YAAAAJ&hl=en.
