When I was eight years old I started to keep insect in a terrarium. Without realising the immensity of the number of species in that group, I wanted to be able to identify all insects I caught. So, at my tenth birthday I received Chinery’s insect guide. And then it really took off…… After a while I realised one could not properly work on all insect groups at the same time, so I started to specialise a little. So, I took on beetles (Coleoptera) and bugs (Heteroptera) and especially grasshoppers and (bush)crickets (Orthoptera) and related orders. My wish to become a taxonomist made me decide to study Biology, which I started in 1985 in Wageningen. Wageningen University offers the opportunity to not only do a major doctoral thesis within the own university, but also demands doing a major project elsewhere, preferably abroad. I took this opportunity to stay for half a year in Gabon. Since only the Plant taxonomy group had such tropical projects available, I went there to study pollination of wild Begonia species, and at the same time of course to collect not only plants but also loads of insects. This was a fascinating half year, and when one year later there was a PhD position available for a study of African trees, which would involve again 2 times half a year in Gabon, I took that opportunity. And so, I also became a plant taxonomist.

Career

After my PhD I worked for the ECOSYN project, and then became researcher and later Assistant Professor and Scientific collection manager at "Herbarium Vadense", part of the Biosystematics Group of Wageningen University. During this period I have travelled numerous times to Africa, mostly to Gabon, and collected a fair amount of plant specimens, but also insects that (except the Orthoptera) found their way to the Naturalis collections. My systematic research concentrates on Legumes, especially Detarieae trees in the wet African forest, but next to that sometimes on other new finds, either or not from my own expeditions.

Since I had developed the first herbarium database of the Wageningen herbarium, but also as it was part of my scientific curator post, I have worked a lot on both the content and the further development of the herbarium database. Part of my research involves analysing the collection database for biodiversity studies, and one can only do so if the tools are in place and the content is correct. For over 15 years the Dutch herbaria are using Brahms, and in cooperation with the developers of Brahms in Oxford we have managed to build many such functionality in this program.

At the moment I still have a double position; on one hand Senior researcher with also a teaching task, on the other Collection manager of the Botany collection of Naturalis.

Research

Research interest

My research interests are wide: taxonomy, biodiversity analyses, phylogenetics, biogeography, and both related to insects and plants. Since most of my field experience is in Africa and Europe, and also most of my taxonomical work relates to Africa, I feel more at ease working on European or African taxa.

Current research topics

African legume trees

Together with Barbara Mackinder and Manuel de la Estrella I work on taxonomic revisions of the genera of the Detarieae (soon to be subfamily Detarioideae) of the legume family. The taxonomic problems of this group on one hand consist of species complex that only now we start to unravel, resulting in several new species, and on the other the often erroneous generic circumscriptions from the past that we try to improve using both morphology and DNA.

Annonaceae

Together with Lars Chatrou (WUR) I supervise Paul Hoekstra who works on a group of liana's of African Annonaceae: Monanthotaxis and related genera. This study is yielding a lot of species new to science, and hopefully new insights in how this group has evolved in such a speciose group.

New species in several families

Resulting from both expeditions or herbarium work one runs into new species. When feasible I try to revise the group of species the new species belongs to and publish that, often in cooperation with others.

Biodiversity analyses

I have been exploring different methods to analyse the large collection database of the NHN (National Herbarium of The Netherlands). One such way is by SDM's (Species Distribution Models). Together with Niels Raes (Naturalis) and Marc Sosef (WUR / Plantentuin Meise) I supervise Andre van Proosdij in a project on generating a biodiversity map for Gabon using SDM's. I also participate in the RAINBIO project.

Orthoptera

I would also like to work more on Orthoptera. During holidays I am taking samples of European bush crickets, and a student master thesis project is available to analyse those samples.

Collections

As Collection manager I take scientific decisions on taxonomical concepts the collection will use, I try to make work processes more fluent. I try to provide both the inside researchers as those in the rest of the world with a good database with as much content as possible, and try to aid researchers in obtaining the material or information they seek.
