I studied biology at the Universities of Groningen and Leiden. In 1970 I was appointed Curator of Entomology in the National Museum of Natural History / Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden; I was Associate Director of the museum from 1990-2005, and heavily involved in its redevelopment.
From 1988-1998 I was President of the Netherlands Entomological Society.
I was editor with professional journals.
- Taxonomy and evolution of Scarabaeoidea (particular groups and Southeast Asian fauna)
- Family-group classification of Coleoptera (with special reference to Southeast Asia)
- Forensic entomology research and support
- Development of taxonomic expert and data mining systems
I have a broad interest in taxonomic biodiversity, and in related information management and nature conservation issues. My primary research focuses on the taxonomy and biogeography of beetles, particularly the Scarabaeoidea (scarabs, chafers, etc.). This brought me to various parts of the tropics, including several expeditions to Southeast Asia and East Africa. An interest in dung and carrion ecology led to me to being active as a consultant in forensic entomology, since 1985, dealing with over 70 cases.
Current research topics
During my career I was involved in many conservation organisations.
