My work on Permian and Triassic floras started in 1991 with the description of a few plant fossils from a Late Triassic flora in Iran. Later I took part in the large project, started by the late Prof. Dr. H.-J. Schweitzer (Bonn, Germany) to describe the whole of the Triassic and Jurassic plant fossils from Iran and Afghanistan. This resulted in a co-authorship of three of the monographs on this flora (Schweitzer et al., 1997, 2000 and 2009; see separate list of publications on Permian and Triassic floras).

I also became involved in the research carried out at the Laboratory of Palaeobotany and Palynology (Utrecht, the Netherlands) on the large extinction event at the end of the Permian and following recovery during the first stage of the Triassic (see separate list of publications).

From 1999 onwards I work on Middle and Late Triassic floras in Northern Italy, dealing in a large number of publications with resp. the Anisian and the Ladinian flora from the Dolomites (with a number of co-authors including Dr. E. Kustatscher whose Msc and PhD theses on these subjects I supervised for a large part) and the Carnian flora of the Bergamasc Alps (a PhD project of Dr. L. Passoni).

Finally, I participated in research papers on Triassic floras in former Yugoslavia, the Netherlands, Germany and Austria (see literature list). I also used data on Permian and Triassic plants in my more general papers dealing with evolution of plant groups etc.

Career

1961-1967 Study Biology University Utrecht.
1967-1970 PhD research; PhD thesis defence: "In situ gymnosperm pollen from the Middle Jurassic of Yorkshire" 2 december 1970 (promotor Prof.F.P.Jonker, Utrecht; co-promotor Prof.T.M. Harris, Reading, Engeland).
1970-present Honorary Scientific researcher University of Utrecht, Laboratory of Palaeobotany and Palynology.
2003-present Extraordinary Professor of Prequaternary Palaeobotany University of Leiden and as such also staff member of the National Herbarium of the Netherlands (Leiden).

Prizes

In 1999 I received together with K.-P.Kelber (University of Würzburg, Germany) the Remy prize from the Paleobotanical Section of the Botanical Society of America for the paper: ‘Equisetites arenaceus from the Upper Triassic of Germany with evidence for reproductive strategies’.

In 2006, the paper “Abbink, O.A., van Konijnenburg-van Cittert, van der Zwan, C.J. & Visscher, H. 2004. A Sporomorph Ecogroup Model for the Northwest European Upper Jurassic – Lower Cretaceous II: Application to an exploration well from the Dutch North Sea. Neth. J. of Geology/Geologie en Mijnbouw 83(2): 81-92” won the Netherlands Journal for Geology publication price.

Research

Research interest

Scientific research projects vary from Early Permian to Late Cretaceous floras, plus the Eocene Azolla bloom in the Arctic Ocean.

Keywords

palaeobotany, fossil pteridophyta, fossil gymnosperms

Current research topics

  • Inventarisation and determination of the Jongmans collection of plant macrofossils from all ages and from all over the world, but with emphasis on the Carboniferous flora from the Netherlands.
  • Revision of the Early Permian flora from Djambi (Indonesia), together with Dr. Isabel van Waveren and Drs. Menno Booi.
  • Late Cretaceous conifers from the Maastrichtian of the type-area, together with Dr. Van der Ham, National Herbarium, Leiden.
  • Santonian plant fossils from Limburg, The Netherlands, together with Drs. H. Bosma.

Brachyphyllum patens from the Maastrichtian type area.

Next to Naturalis, I also work at the Laboratory of Palaeobotany and Palynology, University of Utrecht. There my research interests are:

  • Macropalaeobotany and in situ pollen and spores from the Middle Jurassic of Yorkshire, England.
  • Macropalaeobotany, ecology and in situ pollen and spores from the Late Jurassic flora of Sutherland, Scotland (with Dr. van der Burgh, Utrecht).
  • Late Triassic flora from Bavaria, Germany (with Dr. Kelber, Würzburg).
  • Rhaeto-Liassic flora from Bavaria, Germany (with Dr. Kirchner, München en mr. Schmeißner, Kulmbach).
  • LM, SEM and TEM work on fossil in situ spores and pollen (ferns and gymnosperms); comparison with living material.
  • Ladinian and Anisian floras from the Dolomites (with Dr. Kustatscher, Bolzano and Mr. Wachtler, Innichen, Italy).
  • Permian/Triassic boundary at Bletterbach, Dolomites (with Prof. Kerp, Munster; Dr. Fischer, Munich; Dr. Kustatscher, Bolzano).
  • Azolla remains in the Eocene of the Arctic Ocean (with Prof. Lotter, Prof. Brinkhuis, Dr. van der Burgh, Drs. Barke, all Utrecht and Prof. Collinson, London).

Reconstruction of Neuropteridium elegans from the Anisian of the Dolomites.

Collaborations

In my work at the national Natural History Museum “Naturalis” (Leiden, the Netherlands), I study the Early Permian flora from Jambi (Indonesia) together with Dr. I.M.van Waveren and drs. M. Booi whose PhD on this flora I supervise. Moreover, I supervise the PhD thesis of drs. Hylke Bosma on Late Cretaceous conifers from the Northern Hemisphere, and I work together with dr. Raymond van der Ham (Herbarium) on the Maastrichtian flora of Limburg and surroundings.
