Research interests

Specialities: marine biodiversity, marine biogeography, coral taxonomy, coral phylogeny, coral symbionts, reef coral ecology

Major research themes:

  1. The Indo-Malayan centre of marine biodiversity: the Coral Triangle.
  2. Evolution of inter-specific associations of coral reef organisms (phylogenetic ecology).
  3. Taxonomy, phylogeny and biogeography of corals and other reef organisms.
  4. Marine biodiversity and conservation.
  5. Biodiversity along cross-shelf (onshore-offshore) gradients.
  6. Historical ecology of marine biota.

Coral reef research in the Indo-West Pacific (IWP) since 1983 (the Seychelles, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Palau, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Japan, and Taiwan) and in the Caribbean, 2005 (Dutch Caribbean). Research in Indonesia has been part of a long-term collaboration (since 1983) of Naturalis Biodiversity Center with the Centre for Oceanography, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (PPO-LIPI, Jakarta). Most fieldwork took place during long-term missions in SW Sulawesi (1984-1986, 1993-1998), which were funded by WOTRO (the Netherlands Foundation for the Advancement of Tropical Research). The last project here concerned applied reef coral ecology as part of the WOTRO interdisciplinary research programme "Sustainable Management of the Coastal Area of SW Sulawesi". During this programme Bert Hoeksema was field-coordinator and liaison for the Dutch team, which implied being responsible for logistics and maintaining contact between Hasanuddin University, Ujung Pandang, and the Ducth research team. He was (co-)organizer for Naturalis and collaborating institutes of various marine expeditions: South Sulawesi (1994), Ambon, Moluccas (1996), Cebu, Philippines (1999), Bali (2001), Berau, East Kalimantan Programme - Pilot Phase (2003), Jakarta Bay and the Thousand Islands (2005), Raja Ampat, West Papua (2007), Ternate - Halmahera, northern Moluccas (2009), Semporna, eastern Sabah (2010), and North Sulawesi (2012).
