Participation in expeditions

Coral reef research in the Indo-West Pacific (IWP) since 1983 (Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Palau, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Japan, Taiwan, the Seychelles, and the Maldives) and in the Caribbean since 2005 (Curaçao). Research in Indonesia has been part of a long-term collaboration (since 1983) of Naturalis Biodiversity Center with the Centre for Oceanography, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (PPO-LIPI, Jakarta). Most fieldwork took place during long-term missions in SW Sulawesi (1984-1986, 1993-1998), which were funded by WOTRO (the Netherlands Foundation for the Advancement of Tropical Research). The last project here was part of the WOTRO interdisciplinary research programme "Sustainable Management of the Coastal Area of SW Sulawesi". As field-coordinator Bert Hoeksema was responsible for logistics and contact with Hasanuddin University, Ujung Pandang. He was (co)organizer for Naturalis and collaborating institutes of various marine expeditions: South Sulawesi (1994), Ambon, Moluccas (1996), Cebu, Philippines (1999), Bali (2001), East Kalimantan (2003), Jakarta Bay and the Thousand Islands (2005), Raja Ampat, West Papua (2007), Ternate - Halmahera, northern Moluccas (2009), Sabah (2010, 2012), and North Sulawesi (2012)
