My drive is to relate comprehension to results and progress. My strength is multidisciplinary project management and coaching leadership. Furthermore I am motivated to transfer knowledge into practical applications. I am also driven by new challenges and opportunities. I thrive in situations where I can analyse and have freedom of thinking and acting.

Career

I studied geobiochemistry at Leiden University and obtained my PhD in microbial ecology at the University of Nijmegen. After a post-doc period in the Natural history Museum of Londen and the University of Aberdeen I became staff researcher for molecular microbiology at Plant Research International in Wageningen. From there I became head of the medical microbiology laboratory of the Public Health service of Amsterdam, managing 70 persons in 5 departments.  I moved to Naturalis in 2013 as head of Laboratories for Research and Education. I am now responsible for the technical support and equipment for the Research and Education section. I am also involved in research projects, grant proposals and business development.

Assesment of biodiversity by metabarcoding, human impact studies, environmental quality, taxonomy support and community interactions.

Current research topics

Biodiversity and eDNA

eDNA research has a strong application in environmental monitoring. We will further develop the method of metabarcoding, habitat sampling, DNA extraction and bioinformatics pipelines. We will apply these techniques in water quality assessment and apply for funding from third parties like Aquon, STOWA, KWR,  and Rijkswaterstaat.

We will assess above and below surface biodiversity at the BES islands  and there is a possibility to sample this through time to see the human impact and therefore asses full impact of human practices above ground and the influence of this below the surface. These above and below surface biodiversity assessments can be set up for human impact studies on fragile islands and coastal waters in general.

Microbiology

I will address human and plant health issues of the microbiome and also the exploitation of the hidden metagenome in the Naturalis collection. Further industrial exploitation of the microbiome will be evaluated.

Furthermore the taxonomy application of microbial communities in the field of marine zoology will be evaluated. We will start with this principle with a visiting scientist. Hereafter it can be extended to other organism groups. Also technical challenges in sampling and preservation will be further developed in collaboration with marine zoology research so (meta)barcoding  technology further extends in the projects and grant applications.
