Mount kinabalu is famous amongst birdwatchers for the Whitehead's trio: three rare endemic species of birds. Apart from the Whitehead's spiderhunter, trogon and broadbill, the mountain is home to many other endemic vertebrates.
Of the species included in the study on the endmic species of Mt. Kinabalu, only two where significantly older than the mountain. The frog Kalophrynus baluensis is one of these two species. This could mean that the frog is a relict species from a time when the climate was colder and subsequently moved up the slopes of the mountain to escape higher temperatures. Another explanantion could be that there is a more closely related species which was missed in the present study.
