Biodiversity of the Netherlands
Being the National Museum of Natural History the museum acts as an expert centre for the knowledge of the natural history of the Netherlands. To fulfill this role it collaborates with several organizations.
The programme unites all activities relating to the fauna and geology of the Netherlands. In this context the NNM maintains a huge database of the distribution of invertebrates in the Netherlands. A geological database is under construction as well. Within the programme also falls the publication of books on the fauna and geology of the Netherlands, known as "Nederlandse Fauna" and "Geologie van Nederland", respectively. The programme is supervised by the head of the sector. There is a close collaboration with the Foundation EIS (European Invertebrate Survey), with IKC-NBLF (Information and Knowledge Centre Nature Management) and with the RGD (State Geological Survey). Further, there are close contacts with CBS (Central Bureau of Statistics), Rijkswaterstaat (State Department of Waters) and ETI (Expert-center for Taxonomic Identification). For the faunistic publications contacts are maintained with the KNNV (Royal Netherlands Natural History Society).
