Research interests
My research interests are the evolution, systematics, biogeography and ecology of non-marine gastropods (snails and slugs). Within this broad field, I presently focus on the land snails inhabiting the Afrotropical region (the western part in particular), but other geographic areas are also occasionally touched, for phylogenetic and other comparative reasons, or by stochastic causes. The western Palaearctic non-marine Molluscan fauna has been and remains for me an area of interest.
Projects:
- Systematics of land snail taxa of Africa from Senegal to Northern Angola, and from the Gulf of Guinea Islands to 15° Eastern longitude. An annotated list of taxa is currently being prepared. Numerous new taxa are awaiting description, but this can often only be done after re-evaluation of the taxa described in the past. This prompts smaller and larger revisions at the species level, largely based on conchological characters, since most of the type specimens are empty shells.
- In addition, most groups require major revisions taking also the morphology of the soft parts and molecular data into account, since the systematic grouping of many taxa is still purely based on shell characters, and the generic and even family assignment of species is very uncertain. The following Afrotropical groups are in particular currently being studied:
1. Helicarionoidea of western Africa (Thapsia and other fully-shelled taxa, semislugs and slugs).

2. Western African Streptaxidae (Gulella s.l., Ptychotrema s.l.).

- Handbook "Land snails of the Netherlands" (with E. Gittenberger). A new systematic overview and identification tool of the land snails occuring in the Netherlands. The last book covering the Dutch land snail fauna dates back to 1984. The new book is scheduled in 2009, 25 years after the previous one, at the occasion of the 75th anniversity of the Dutch Malacological Society.
