Research interests

Specialities: Cainozoic to recent molluscs, relationship molluscs and depositional environments, mollusc taxonomy.

As a geology student my work focused on the stratigraphy and depositional history of the Devonian and early Carboniferous of  the Cantabrian mountains (NW Spain), in which I used conodonts as indicator for the age of the rocks. Since 1984 I work as geologist for Shell International Exploration and Production, currently as Global Advisor Production Geosciences.

I have always been interested in recent and Cainozoic molluscs. I spend a lot of my spare time on the study of these, initially focusing on western Europe. The relationship between mollusc faunas and depositional environments has my special attention. From 1992 to 1997 I lived in Sarawak (Malaysia) which gave me the opportunity to study recent and Cainozoic shallow-water faunas of NW Borneo, a thus far little studied area.  Based on the material collected several studies are ongoing. Again my work focuses on the relationship between mollusc faunas and depositional environments – which has proved especially useful to understand the depositional history and related faunal changes during the Holocene. So far a few papers on specific mollusc groups have been published, with others in preparation, including some on more general subjects.

I have been board member  of various natural history societies: Werkgroep voor Tertiaire en Kwartaire Geologie and Nederlandse Malacologische Vereniging (Netherlands), and Miri Natural History Society and Sarawak Branch of the Malaysian Natural History Society (Malaysia).
