Research interests
1. Cryptic fauna of coral reefs
Coral-associated organisms contribute to the sheer species richness of coral ecosystems. I work on gall crabs (Cryptochiridae), symbionts of stony corals.
2. Faunal changes in Jakarta Bay (1920-2005)
With the use of the scientific collections in Naturalis, old publications and note books, nautical maps et cetera, I try to reconstruct the coral assemblages of the Jakarta Bay area around 1920. This information is compared with recent fieldwork data (2005) to document long-term changes.
3. Taxonomy of the genus Lioconcha
The venerid genus Lioconcha is a rather well-known group of sturdy bivalves with characteristic dark zigzag patterns. Relatively few morphological characters are available to distinguish the species.
In the media
Our findings of possible nudibranch predation by sea anemones spurred the interest of the BBC and the popular blog Deep Sea News. Highly recommended!
The Dutch website Java Post wrote an interesting article about the fate of the coral islands in Jakarta Bay. The article can be found here (in Dutch).
