Drs. J. (Jan) Krikken
Coleoptera
Studied biology at the Universities of Groningen and Leiden. In 1970 appointed Curator of Entomology in the National Museum of Natural History Naturalis, Leiden, he was Associate Director of the museum from 1990-2005, being heavily involved in its redevelopment. From 1988-1998 Jan was President of the Netherlands Entomological Society. He has a broad interest in taxonomic biodiversity, and in related information management and nature conservation issues. His primary research focuses on the taxonomy and biogeography of beetles, particularly the Scarabaeoidea (like dung and carrion beetles). This brought him to various parts of the tropics, including several expeditions to Southeast Asia and East Africa. It also led to his being active as a consultant in forensic entomology, for more than 20 years, during which he dealt with over 60 cases. Published about 90 scientific papers on the various subjects mentioned.
Research interests
- Taxonomy and evolution of Scarabaeoidea (particular groups and Southeast Asian fauna)
- Family-group classification of Coleoptera (with special reference to Southeast Asia)
- Forensic entomology research and support
- Development of taxonomic expert and data mining systems
