Scientific research projects vary from Early Permian to Late Cretaceous floras, and the Eocene Azolla bloom in the Arctic Ocean. 

In 1999 I received together with K.-P.Kelber (University of Würzburg, Germany) the Remy prize from the Paleobotanical Section of the Botanical Society of America for the paper: ‘Equisetites arenaceus from the Upper Triassic of Germany with evidence for reproductive strategies’.

In 2006, the paper “Abbink, O.A., van Konijnenburg-van Cittert, van der Zwan, C.J. & Visscher, H. 2004. A Sporomorph Ecogroup Model for the Northwest European Upper Jurassic – Lower Cretaceous II: Application to an exploration well from the Dutch North Sea. Neth. J. of Geology/Geologie en Mijnbouw 83(2): 81-92” won the Netherlands Journal for Geology publication price.

Research interests

  • Inventarisation and determination of the Jongmans collection of plant macrofossils from all ages and from all over the world, but with emphasis on the Carboniferous flora from the Netherlands.
  • Revision of the Early Permian flora from Djambi (Indonesia), together with Dr. Isabel van Waveren and Drs. Menno Booi.
  • Late Cretaceous conifers from the Maastrichtian of the type-area, together with Dr. Van der Ham, National Herbarium, Leiden 
  • Santonian plant fossils from Limburg, The Netherlands, together with Drs. H. Bosma.

Next to Naturalis, I also work at the Laboratory of Palaeobotany and Palynology, University of Utrecht. There my research interests are:

  • Macropalaeobotany and in situ pollen and spores from the Middle Jurassic of Yorkshire, England.
  • Macropalaeobotany, ecology and in situ pollen and spores from the Late Jurassic flora of Sutherland, Scotland (with Dr. van der Burgh, Utrecht).
  • Late Triassic flora from Bavaria, Germany (with Dr. Kelber, Würzburg).
  • Rhaeto-Liassic flora from Bavaria, Germany (with Dr. Kirchner, München en mr. Schmeißner, Kulmbach).
  • LM, SEM and TEM work on fossil in situ spores and pollen (ferns and gymnosperms); comparison with living material
  • Ladinian and Anisian floras from the Dolomites (with Dr. Kustatscher, Bolzano and Mr. Wachtler, Innichen, Italy)
  • Permian/Triassic boundary at Bletterbach, Dolomites (with Prof. Kerp, Munster; Dr. Fischer, Munich; Dr. Kustatscher, Bolzano)
  • Azolla remains in the Eocene of the Arctic Ocean (with Prof. Lotter, Prof. Brinkhuis, Dr. van der Burgh, Drs. Barke, all Utrecht and Prof. Collinson, London)
