Research interests

I work with Cainozoic molluscs from northwestern Europe. In the past I have been involved in Miocene and Oligocene faunas from the southern North Sea Basin. Already in the late nineteen sixties I have been part of mapping and research campaigns of the Werkgroep voor Tertiaire en Kwartaire Geologie (WTKG) in Dutch and Belgium Limburg, studying the Oligocene geology and palaeontology. In the nineteen seventies and early nineteen eighties my attentions shifted to Late Oligocene and Miocene faunas. In the past ten years my work shifted to the processing of the Deltadienstboreholes. After the storm surge of February 1, 1953 the area was flooded. In order to prevent another similar disaster, the Deltaworks were initiated. To support the construction of these works as well as to understand the hydrological system in the area, many hundreds of shallow and some tens of deeper boreholes have been made.  Until now I have processed some ten boreholes that provide a lot of insight into the Neogene and Quaternary landscape evolution and molluscan biodiversity development in the southern North Sea Basin. The deltadienst project is carried out in collaboration with Frank Wesselingh, Tom Meijer and Andre Slupik.

Furthermore I am very interested in the fossil shells from the Dutch beaches. I collect and study the Quaternary fossils that have been suppleted onto the beaches of Zuid Holland and Zeeland.
