Research interests
Gall crabs and their stony corals hosts
I am interested in coral-associated organisms, and in particular coral gall crabs (Cryptochiridae). My PhD thesis focuses on the evolutionary history of gall crabs and their coral hosts.
In addition I enjoy working on:
Faunal changes in Jakarta Bay (1920-2005)
With the use of the scientific collections in Naturalis, old publications and note books, nautical maps et cetera, I try to reconstruct the mollusk and coral assemblages of the Jakarta Bay area around 1920.
Taxonomy of the genus Lioconcha
The venerid genus Lioconcha is a rather well-known group of sturdy bivalves with characteristic dark zigzag patterns, but few morphological characters for distinguishing species.
In the media
Our findings of possible nudibranch predation by sea anemones spurred the interest of the BBC and the popular blog Deep Sea News. Highly recommended!
The Dutch website Java Post features an interesting article about the fate of the coral islands in Jakarta Bay. The article can be found here (in Dutch).
