Research interests

European Invertebrate Survey – The Netherlands

The European Invertebrate Survey aims to gather and publish information of all invertebrates in the Netherlands and to a lesser extend of Europe. For this we maintain distribution databases, organize mapping schemes and publish a newsletter, a journal, a series of entomological keys and a book series. Our knowledge is used to advice both governmental and non-governmental organisations. Much of the information gathered by the European Invertebrate Survey can be found through Nederlands Soortenregister, a complete list of the biodiversity of the Netherlands. Despite our name most activities are focussed on the Netherlands. European activities include the work on the European Red List of dragonflies, the website ‘The Orthoptera of Europe’ and the European atlas of dragonflies. The latter project is a co-operation of over fifty organizations and experts who joined forces to build a distribution database of European dragonflies. Publication of the atlas is scheduled for 2011-2012.

Global Dragonfly Assessment

I am chair of the IUCN Dragonfly Specialist Group since April 2007. In this group specialist from all over the world cooperate in order to make information on taxonomy, distribution and threats available. Currently the Specialist Group is working on the Global Dragonfly Assessment, an ambitious plan to assess the conservation status of dragonflies. One of the first major achievements of this project is the Red List Species Index for dragonflies. For this project the status of 1500 randomly selected species (roughly 25% of the world total) was assessed in order to get an indication of the state of the world dragonflies. The results have been published in 2009 (PDF).

Biogeography Australasian dragonflies

I have a strong interest in the taxonomy and biogeography of Asian dragonflies. Currently my studies focus on the patterns of diversity found in Australasia and especially on the links between New Guinea with Australia and the Philippines. My main subject for this study is the family Megapodagrionidae, a poorly understood and probably polyphyletic tropical family which is strongly represented in the Australasian region. For fieldwork in New Guinea I co-operate with CIs' Rapid Assessment Program, the Cenderawasih University (Jayapura) and Papua Insects Foundation. A field guide for the dragonflies of North Papua is being prepared by Bert Orr and me (example plate).
