History, diversity and identification
of dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata)

My passion for natural history began when I was nine living in Egypt. After obtaining my MSc at Leiden University (cum laude), I worked as freelancer and research associate at Naturalis, publishing over forty papers on African Odonata. I obtained my PhD based on this accumulated work, for which I received the Worldwide Dragonfly Association outstanding achievement award. Systematic and evolutionary research continues, especially on Zygoptera with DAWN (Damselfly Workers Naturalis). I was postdoctoral researcher at the University Museum of Zoology, Cambridge, in 2012, reviewing freshwater insect diversification. I am now research leader at the University of Stellenbosch, enabling the application of dragonflies as indicators of freshwater health and biodiversity Africa-wide, funded by the JRS Biodiversity Foundation.

Conservation and consultancy

The most conspicuous freshwater insects, Odonata represent both a vital human resource and the largest class of animal diversity, responding to change above and below the water surface. I largely revised the taxonomy of the African Odonata and, as member of the IUCN Dragonfly Specialist Group, contributed to the Freshwater Biodiversity Assessment of Africa, resulting in Red List assessments for 700 species. Odonata are applied increasingly in environmental impact assessments, especially where aquatic systems are vulnerable, e.g. by mining and damming. I undertook fieldwork in sixteen African countries, including in DR Congo, Liberia and Ghana for Conservation International’s RAP program, the Congo 2010 initiative and consultancies for (e.g.) the Millennium Challenge Corporation in Tanzania and ArcelorMittal in Liberia.

I studied dragonflies at all black sites; other dragonfly data are available from white sites.

Collections and education

I reviewed important historical collections (Tervuren, Bulawayo, Nairobi) and amassed the foremost collection of African Odonata: over 610 species of about 730 known are included, of which I caught 540 personally. Knowledge gained on odonate ecology, evolution, taxonomy and conservation lead to invitations for teaching and research at universities in Europe, Africa and Asia, most recently for the Tropical Biology Association in Tanzania. I was curator of invertebrates at the University of Suriname (NZCS), initiating collaboration with Naturalis: supported by the Dutch Foreign Ministry, collections from Suriname were disclosed in databases and books.

Dragonfly books

The fieldguide to European Odonata appeared in English (sample), French and Dutch, with 20,000 copies sold since 2006. A handbook for over 500 species occurring from Sudan through eastern DRC to Mozambique (70% of the African fauna) will appear in 2013. I was also co-editor and co-author of the handbook of Dutch Odonata.

Societies and journals

I co-founded the Dutch society for odonatology (NVL) and its journal Brachytron, and am subject editor (taxonomy) for the ISI-listed International Journal of Odonatology (IJO).

Publicity and photography

Watch me during the Congo 2010 expedition on the Belgian TV news and documentary (both Dutch), catching a new dragonfly species for science, or read the articles in De Volkskrant (Dutch), Le Vif/L'Express Magazine and Terre Sauvage (both French). I spoke about my work at PINC.12, for Wish You Were Here 2011 at Toneelgroep Amsterdam, and on Dutch national radio (Villa VPRO and NCRV's Casa Luna). See my photographs here, or place your own of African Dragonflies.
