Dubois collection online
Next to the actual fossils the Dubois collection contains an extensive archive on material connected to these fossils and to Eugène Dubois’ life. These archives complete the collection as they provide written proof for locations and circumstances under which fossils were found. As such they are still very regularly consulted by researchers of this material.
They also contain a wealth of information on Eugène Dubois’ life, and Naturalis continuously tries to complete this collection. The ultimate goal is to put all this information online, free accessible to everybody.
In the future, the following will be accessable online:
- Dubois collection — list of fossils (+40000)
- Dubois correspondence — correspondence alphabetically ordered on author/receiver
- Dubois manuscripts — articles; notebooks, agenda’s, university notes etcetera
- Dubois photographs — glass negatives & positives (+2300); photographs (printed)
Questions to the public
You can help us. There are for instance photographs taken at unknown locations which you can help us identify. All manuscripts are photographed but not all are deciphered. If you pick a letter, decipher it, mail us the contents, than we will add this information to the site. And last but not least we are still expecting new material to come in. Even you might find a Dubois letter or photograph in somebody’s correspondence somewhere. We would be very happy to acquire copies of such material (or originals). Anyone interested can visit
