DNA sampling
Policy and conditions regarding the use of remains of museum specimens for DNA studies.
Permission for DNA extraction will only be granted:
- when the research proposal for which the sample is required has been approved by Naturalis;
- when the method that is proposed, clarifying especially which part of the specimen might be irreversibly damaged, has been approved by Naturalis;
- if the sample(s) will be used for the research as described in the proposal only;
- when sufficient objects from which samples are requested are present in the collection;
- if all remaining research material (samples, extracts, dry DNA, etc.) as well as the results of the analyses (the sequences) will be returned to Naturalis after the study has been completed;
- if it is indicated on forehand and agreed on with Naturalis how the samples will be stored and returned (-80 degrees; dry; in alcohol 96%, etc.);
- if the samples will not be forwarded to third parties;
- if it is the aim of the study to publish the results in international scientific journals, with Naturalis acknowledged in these publications;
- when the proposal does not interfere negatively with ongoing projects in Naturalis or at Leiden University;
- when the applicant himself can produce copies of CITES- or other export and/or import documents, if required.
- when it concerns type-specimens or specimens of extinct species, permission for DNA extraction will only be granted in very exceptional cases.
Permission is granted on a case-by-case basis and only when a signed Naturalis DNA sampling agreement is returned by the investigator.
